好莱坞新人马特．戴蒙主演兼编剧的一部反映美国二十世纪末年轻人心理的佳片，获1998年9项奥斯卡提名，并且马特．戴蒙和他的童年好友本．艾弗利克最终凭本片获得奥斯卡编剧奖；《死亡诗社》导演罗宾．威廉姆斯凭本片获奥斯卡最佳男配角奖。故事描述一个少年时受到父母虐待的天才青年，他虽为麻省理工学院的守门人，也没上过大学，而且整日把业余时间用在了酒巴和聊天之中，但他却有着过人的数学天赋。在一名数学教授和同样有心理障碍的心理教授的帮助下，他终于消除了心理痼疾，并找到了适合自己的工作和属于自己的爱情，以此揭示了本片的主题：人自己决定自己，并不是由别人和功利决定。导演为美国非主流电影杰出代表格斯．范．山特，他的其它作品有《药房牛仔》、《我自己的爱达荷》、《死亡机密》。

You've never actually stood there and looked up at that beautiful ceiling…seen that. If I ask you about women, you'll probably give me a syllabus of your personal favorites. You may have even been laid a few times. But you can't tell me what it feels like to wake up next to a woman and feel truly happy. You're a tough kid. And I ask you about war, you'd probably, uh, throw Shakespeare at me, right? "Once more unto the breach, dear friends…" But you've never been near one. You've never held your best friend's head in your lap…and watched him gasp his last breath, lookin' to you for help. I ask you about love, you'll probably quote me a sonnet. But you've never looked at a woman and been totally vulnerable……known someone that could level you with her eyes……feelin' like God put an angel on earth just for you……who could rescue you from the depths of hell……and you wouldn't know what it's like to be her angel……to have that love for her, be there forever…through anything…through cancer. And you wouldn't know about sleeping sittin' up in a hospital room for two months, holding her hand, because the doctors could see in your eyes that the terms "visiting hours" don't apply to you. You don't know about real loss……'cause that only occurs when you love something more than you love yourself.I doubt you've ever dared to love anybody that much. I look at you.I don't see an intelligent, confident man. I see a cocky, scared-****less kid. But you're a genius, Will. No one denies that. No one could possibly understand the depths of you. But you presume to know everything about me, because you saw a painting of mine. You ripped my ****in' life apart. You're an orphan, right? Do you think I know the first thing about how hard your life has been? How you feel? Who you are? Because I read Oliver Twist? Does that encapsulate you? Personally, I don't give a **** about all that. Because you know what? I can't learn anything from you I can't read in some ****in' book. Unless, you wanna talk about you…who you are. Then I 'm fasci ated. I'm in. But you don't want to do that, do you, sport? You're terrified of what you might say.
