Apple(苹果)
to be the apple of one’s eye
exp. to be one’s favorite 掌上明珠;心爱物
·She’s the apple of her father’s eye. 她是她父亲的掌上明珠
the Big Apple
exp. New York 大苹果城[即纽约]
·I live in the Big Apple. 我住在大苹果城。
compare apples and oranges
exp. to compare two things that simply cannot be compared比较两个无法相比的事物
·That’s ridiculous. Now you’re comparing apples and oranges. 真可笑,你这是拿两种无法相比的东西作比较,就好像苹果和桔子。
"How do you like them apples?"
exp. "What do you think of that?" 你认为那怎么样?
*注:这是对某种冒犯性行为做出报复后所说的话。

关于apple用法的补充:
1、apple-polisher 马屁精
例如:She is a real apple-polisher for the way she’s crawling around the boss and making eyes at him. 她是一个马屁精,整天围着老板眉来眼去的。
2、The rotten apple injures its neighbours. 一只烂, 烂一筐; 一个坏朋友可以影响一群好人。
3、谚语:
Throw away the apple because of the core. 因噎废食
An apple a day keeps the doctor away. 日吃苹果一只,身体健康不求医。
4、习惯用语:
as like as an apple to an oyster 毫无相同之处
bad apple,rotten apple (美俚)坏家伙
polish the apple (美俚)拍马屁, 讨好
upset sb.’s apple cart 破坏某人计划

To be bananas
Exp. To be crazy 发疯的;神经错乱的
·That guy’s bananas!那家伙真是疯了。
*注意:to go bananas
exp.
1. to become crazy 发疯;神经错乱
·I’m so bored. I’m going bananas. 我厌烦得要死,都快发疯了。
2.To become wild with anger 狂怒,气得发疯
·She went bananas when she found him cheating. 她发现他欺骗时气得要命。
To play second banana
Exp. To be second choice 第二选择;次要任务
·I always play second banana to her. 我总是做她的候补。
Top banana
Exp. Main boss 领袖;头头;大老板
·He’s (the) top banana in this company. 他是这家公司的大老板。

Bean (豆)
Bean brain
Exp. Idiot 白痴,笨蛋
·He’s such a bean brain. 他是个大笨蛋。
*注意:此词语暗示某人的脑子只有豆子那么大。
Not to know beans about something
Exp. Not to know anything about something 对某事物一无所知
·I don’t know beans about computers. 我对电脑一窍不通。
*注意:此词语只有否定形式, “to know beans about something”这种说法不存在。
Bean Town
Exp. Boston, Massachusetts 豆城 [指马萨诸塞州波士顿市]
*注:波士顿市以其特产烘豆而闻名

Beet(甜菜)
Beet red
Exp. To be extremely red from blushing, embarrassment, etc. [因窘迫、羞愧等]脸红
·She was so embarrassed she turned beet red. 她窘得满脸通红。
但red beet 是指“红甜菜”噢!
Cabbage(洋白菜、甘蓝菜)
Cabbage
n. money 钱,金钱
*注:这个词语尽管已不再常用,但偶尔也会在老影片或玩笑中听到。

Exp. To tempt someone with an unobtainable offer 开空头支票[以
实践不了的诺言诱惑某人]
·The boss told me if I perform well on the job, we’ll talk about a salary increase next year. But I think he’s just dangling a carrot in front of me. 老板告诉我,如果我工作表现出色, 明年加工资就有商量了。但我想他这不过是开了一张空头支票。

Cauliflower ears
Exp. Swollen ears usually resulting from a boxing match [拳击运动员因多次受击而肿起的]开花耳朵
·That boxer has cauliflower ears. 那位拳击运动员的耳朵被打开花了。

Corn(谷物;谷粒)
"For corn sake!"
exclam. "Oh, my goodness!" “噢,天哪!”
*注:这个词语虽然已相当过时,但中老年人仍在使用。
corn
n. melodrama, overemotional drama 情节剧;感情表现夸张的戏剧
·What a bunch of corn! 这一连串的情节剧真精彩啊!
*亦作:corny adj. melodramatic 情节剧的;夸张的
· The movie was so corny! 这部电影表现得太夸张了!
cornball
adj. ridiculous 荒唐的,可笑的
·Where did you buy that cornball hat? 你从哪儿买来的那顶滑稽的帽子?

Cucumber(黄瓜,胡瓜)
(to be) cool as a cucumber
exp. to be calm and composed 十分冷静,镇定自如
· Although he’s guilty of the crime, he sure is cool as a cucumber. 尽管他犯了罪,却还是那么镇定自如。

Fruit (水果;果实)
n. (derogatory) homo*ual [贬义]同性恋的人
·I think that guy’s a fruit. 我觉得那家伙是个同性恋者。
*注意:1:fruit adj. (derogatory) said of an effeminate homo*ual male [贬义]具女人气的同性恋男子
*注意2:“fruit”一字带有很强的贬义,同性恋者群众能予接受的词为“gay”。
Fruitcake
n. an insane person 蠢人;疯子
·What a fruitcake! 真是个疯子!
*注意:形容词“nutty”的字面含义为“full of nuts”(满是坚果的),但通常是指“发疯的,发狂的”,因此出现了下面这个很流行的双关语:to be nuttier than a fruitcake
