When you walk the streets of Paris, there is always a picture around the corner or on a bridge. Here on the Ponts des Arts, near the Le de la Cite, people gather on weekends, selling jewelry, art, souvenirs, even offering a chance to be the Mona Lisa. I followed this chap carrying this faceless picture and watched him set up. When his girlfriend came along, they took time out for a kiss---an event for absolutely no interest to the two little girls.

Suleyman and his family, devout Muslims, highly respected the dervishes. Each December the group commemorates the death of their founder, Rumi, in 1273 by performing this ritual dance with the right hand facing heaven, left hand facing earth. Their spinning symbolizes the planets revolving around Allah. It took almost three months of effort to secure photographic permission from the proper dervish authorities. I knew it was going to be spectacular, and I didn’t want to miss it.

Great natural wonders pose a particular challenge---they have all been photographed countless times. For Africa famed Victoria Falls I tried aerial pictures at sunrise and sunset, but from the ground I spotted this photographer and friend trying to keep themselves and their camera dry in the thunderous mist. I only had to maneuver to wrap the rainbow around them.
