Velia: How come your grocery bill is less than mine. We bought more or less the same stuff.
Annar: Well I noticed that you go for the big-name brands.
Velia: Don't you?
Annar: No I try to buy generic and store-brand products. They're always cheaper than the big-name brands.
Velia: But they don't look so good. The packaging isn't so attractive.
Annar: It's what's inside that's important. Fancy packaging is what you pay extra for.
Generic指「某一类东西共有的」,general则指「一般的」,例如﹕(1) The generic term for trout, salmon, carp, etc, is "fish"(鳟、鲑、鲤等的统称是「鱼」)。(2) The general opinion is that the president should step down(一般人都认为,总统应该下台)。 例如﹕(1) Generic medicines are cheaper but no less effective than those with trademarks(没商标的药,比有商标的便宜,效用则不稍逊)。(2) This is the generic equivalent of Coca-Cola / This is generic cola(这是和可口可乐同类的没商标饮料 / 这是没有商标的可乐)。 Store-brand本是美式英语说法,但今天英式英语也常用这个词,例如﹕Both supermarkets in Hong Kong have their own-brand / store-brand products(香港两家超级市场,都有自己牌子的产品)。留意You go for the big-name brands这一句。Go for有「喜欢」、「挑选」的意思,例如﹕(1) Not every man goes for blondes(男人不一定都喜欢金发女郎)。(2) He goes for Cantonese food(他爱吃广东菜)。
