For readers who want to understand more about the Philippines, I would like to recommend to them this rare book of a family history: Beneath the Banyan Tree.
This superbly researched chronicle is supported by rare photographs, maps and letters. It depicts the minutiae of life in the Philippines. Such minutiae include interesting terminology: such as Chinos, or Mestizos, and Terno (which is the beautiful puff-sleeved national dress for women) etc.
The book is written with a personal focus and the author is the daughter of a Philippine ambassador to the United Kingdom. She is also the daughter-in-law of Sir Kenneth Fung Ping-fan in Hong Kong.
Chinese life in the Philippines
This chronicle covers four generations of the Lichauco family, which migrated in the 19th century from Tong'an to settle down in the Philippines. The book straddles different places across the Pacific Ocean, from Hong Kong and China to the Philippines and the USA.
Written with the objectivity of a historian, this gripping story unfolds the history of the Philippines before our very eyes. From this book, readers also get a glimpse of how Chinese migrants survived, how they settled down there and made the Philippines their home.
Each interesting episode is told skillfully and dispassionately, revealing the pre-World War II history of the Philippines; the fight for independence from their Spanish colonisers in a turbulent bygone age; through the Japanese occupation during WWII to the modern day Philippines, with Hong Kong serving as an important backdrop.
Published by CBL Fung
Printed in HK by The Green Pagoda Press Limited 2009.
Cornelia (Nelly) Lichauco Fung is the eldest daughter of Marcial and Jessie Lichauco.
