Directions: Write a letter of complaint according to the following situation: You and your friend went to buy souvenirs, but the assistant refused your request of removing the dust from some of the bronze statues and murmured that your friend is foolish. You ask the manager to look into this unsatisfactory state of affairs.
Write your letter in no less than 150 words. Do not sign your own name at the end of the letter; use Zhang Yu instead. You do not need to write the address.
                                 A Letter of Complaint
                                                              November 23, 2007
      Dear Manager,
              Much to my regret, I write this to place a complaint against one of your shop-assistants concerning bad service in the course of our shopping yesterday.
             Yesterday at about ten o’clock in the morning, my husband, a lady friend of ours and I, came to your shop with the intention of buying some souvenirs. One of your shop-assistants, whose badge number was 15 if I got it right, was asked to remove the dust from some of the bronze statues in order that our friend might have a good look at these objects before making up her mind to buy. Under such a suitation, it was the assistant’s duty either to do what she was asked to do or to explain why she was unable to comply with such a request.
              Instead of attending to her duty and acting in a polite manner, the assistant turned a deaf ear to our request and walked away murmuring in a sarcastic manner that our friend was foolish in asking for the removal of the dust. Great was our embarrassment in such an awkward situation.
              We ask you to look into this unsatisfactory state of affairs and to take steps to prevent a similar recurrnce of such offensive behavior in future. The lady in question is from New Zealand and it would be a pity if she should form an unfavorable impression of the service in this city.
                                                             Yours Respectfully,
                                                                  Zhang Yu

             Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: Keeping Customs. You should write at least 150 words and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:
             1、  当移居国外时,有人喜欢入乡随俗。
             2、  有人喜欢坚持故乡风俗习惯。
             3、  你的看法。
                                    Keeping Customs
             When people move to another country, they not only face a different environment and language, but also different customs. Some people choose to follow the customs of their adopted country, they may find that it helps them to adapt more quickly to the new society. They have something to discuss and share with their new neighbors, and sharing customs is one way for people to feel closer to one another. Thus, following the new customs may help immigrants feel more at home. It may also help them to see the positive things in their new environment and do forget their feelings of homesickness.
On the other hand, some people choose to continue following their own customs may also find that it helps them feel more at home. There are many things to adjust to in another country, and following their traditional customs may help people feel more secure in the new surroundings. More importantly, our customs are a part of us. They are an expression of the culture that has shaped us. This is something that most of us would like to pass down to our children and share with others.
            To sum up, our customs have value and are an important part of our culture. Therefore, I don’t believe that we should abandon our traditional customs when we move to another country. At the same time, I believe that we should learn about the customs of our new home and follow those that appeal to us. In this way, we can remember and celebrate our old culture while adapting to our new one.

             Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic How People Spend Their Holidays. You should write at least 150 words, and base your composition on the table and the outline given below:
Year  1990  1995  2000
Traveling  37%  51%  76%
Staying at home  63%  49%  24%
        1、  根据上表,简要描述1990年、1995年、2000年某城市人们度假方式的情况及其变化;
        2、  请说明发生这些变化的原因;
        3、  得出结论。
                            How People Spend Their Holidays
            As is clearly shown in the table that there was a dramatic change in the way people spent their holidays between 1990 and 2000. Especially, in 1990, 63% of people spent their holidays at home, while the figure decreased considerably to 24% in 2000. there are three reasons for this phenomenon.
            To begin with, with the development of market-oriented(orient 东方升起的) economy, people earn by far more money than they used to, making it possible for them to afford traveling expenses. In addition, people realize the importance of getting well-informed about the outside world in this modern era to develop their potential. For example, a traveller may encounter or talk with someone of a different cultural background so as to broaden his vision. Last but not least, by traveling outside, people are close to nature, which is not only beneficial to both their health and peace of mind. In short, more and more people take the occasion of holiday to travel outside and relax themselves.
            As far as I am concerned, I prefer to go traveling instead of staying at home during holidays. On the one hand, I love meeting different people and take in some fresh ideas. On the other hand, it is agreed that the world is becoming a global village. No one could confine himself within his small circle of families or relatives. In brief, I have benefited a lot and will benefit more from traveling during the holidays.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Incomes and Savings. You should write at least 150 words, and base your composition on the table and the outline given below:

1、  上图所示为近年中国居民收入和存款增长率的变化,描述其变化并说明原因;
2、  对此做出评价。
Incomes and Savings
From the charts we can easily find that incomes in China are increasing, and savings deposits are also increasing. In 1965, the average annual income in China increased at a rate of 6%, and the savings increased 6.5%. in 2005 the numbers soared to 29.5% and 31% respectively.
The possible reasons, I think, may be as follows. First, with the development of the economy, the wealth of our whole nation’s increasing. So this promotes the increase in income and savings. Secondly, people have changed their consumption habits greatly in recent years. For example, many parents now spend a lot on their children’s education, and they have to save money for their children’s higher education. Last but not least, with the increase of income, people have more money to save, which can later be spent on insurance, house payments and other large expenses.
In my opinion, the increase of income and savings is just like a double-edged sword which can benefit the whole nation’s revenue while hindering the economy’s development. The more money is saved in the bank, the less money people spend. To put it briefly, I think China’s government should take some effective measures to encourage consumption to promote the further development of the economy.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic The Changes of the Percentages of Chinese Professions. You should write at least 150 words, and base your composition on the table and the outline given below:

1、  根据上表,简要描述1980年与1999年我国农业、工业和服务业从业人员所占比例的情况及其变化;
2、  请说明发生这些变化的原因;
3、  得出结论。
The Changes of the Percentages of Chinese Professions
It can be seen from the chart that the great changes have occurred in the professional pattern in China between 1980 and 1999 with a great increase in the people involved either in manufacturing or service and a corresponding shrinking in agricultural population. Especially, in 1999, 38% of the Chinese working in the agriculturak industry, decreased nearly half to that of 1980 while the number of people engaged in service industry quadrupled that of 1980. Why are there such great changes during 20 years?
In my opinion, three possible reasons contribute to it. First of all, with the development of primitive economy, more people will move over into manufacturing and the service industries. Secondly, China’s open-door and economic reform policies realize more efficient and effective farming and increased urbanization. For example, with the development of what is called the village and township enterprises, a great number of farmers are now working in various small business without living their homes, which accounts mainly for the increase in manufacturing population. Finally, the economic policies result in an immense improvement in the Chinese people’s living standard, which creates a great huge demand for service and thus enable the service industries to flourish and absorbs more and more people into these fields.
As far as the effect is concerned, the changes of the percentages of Chinese professions will have far-reaching significance. On the one hand, these changes signify the great achievements China has made since she launched the economic reform and opened her door to the world. On the other hand, they also mark a great leap foward on her way towards an economic power in the world. In a word, both the nation’s development and her people’s living standard will get more and more benefit from these changes.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic The Decline in Technical Secondary Schools. You should write at least 150 words, and base your composition on the table and the outline given below:

1、  上图是1999~2001年我国中等专业学校发展图表,描述其变化;
2、  简略说明产生这些变化的原因。
The Decline in Technical Secondary Schools
According to the above statistics, the number of students attending technical secondary schools is decreasing. As a result, more and more technical secondary schools have closed down, which has raised great public concern.
There are several reasons that contribute to the decline of enrollment in these schools. First, with the reform of the national educational system, colleges and high schools are enrolling an increasing number of students, resulting in intensified competition for technical secondary schools. Secondly, the requirement for technicians are becoming more and more demanding, while many of these schools have failed to meet the increased requirements and lost their attraction to young people. Thirdly, most people don’t respect these schools and play down their importance.
However, this decline will come to an end in the near future and technical secondary education will thrive once again because our society is in great need of workers with considerable technical skills for economic development. At the same time, through years of struggle for existence, these schools have learned to adapt themselves to the changing situation, orient their curriculums towards the demands of the market and provide necessary instruction for their graduates. In addition, the government considers technical secondary education to be important, and these schools will enjoy stronger support from the government.

   2、但是手机铃声也会影响其他人。
   3、在某些场合请关掉你的手机。
                            Turn off Your Cell Phone
      With the development of information techno1ogy and reduced price of communication products, the mobi1e phone has become a necessity for most people. Obviously, it shortens the distance between people and makes our life more convenient. Thanks to the cell phone, it’s easy for us to contact or be contacted by others anytime and anywhere. We will never miss any important meetings,great deals or admirable opportunities.
      however,have you noticed sometimes the cell phone also brings embarrassment to us? It’s not rare to see someone pressing the cell phone to his ear and shouting loudly in public as if there were no one else present. And I’m sure each one has had such an experience that the cell phone ring continuous1y on a formal occasion. Perhaps these people have many 1ife-and-death reasons to keep the phone working at all times, but it interrupts people around them who have to hear what they don’t care when they want to concentrate on what they’re doing.
      So if you are one of them, please shut off your cell phone in public, especially on a quiet and serious occasion. It’s a respect for both others and yourself.
