CALIFORNICATION是乐队最旋律化的成熟作品，这种旋律不是向市场妥协的糖水，而是乐队体味人生、回归音乐源头、不失冲动又趋于内敛的内心世界的反映。标志性的Funk节奏与撩人心弦的旋律，CALIFORNICATION是把红辣椒送入摇滚名人堂的作品。2004年7月，《男人帮》杂志把Californication评为10年来最佳专辑。

红辣椒乐队
“红辣椒”乐队在2002年的全新专辑《By The Way》中，就已经显示出向“主流”靠近的倾向。其实，仅仅凭借他们早年的两张专辑《Blood Sugar Sex Magik》和《Californication》，就已无人可以动摇“红辣椒”在Funk-Metal领域中“大师级”的地位，特别是贝斯Flea一手娴熟的勾击弦技艺，也只有“Primus”乐队的Les Claypool能与其相提并论。

　　此张最新出版的精选辑中，收录了从1989年的专辑《Mother\'s Milk》到《By the Way》中所有抒情的曲目。虽然精选辑中并没有涉及到“红辣椒”前三张专辑《Red Hot Chili Peppers》、《Freaky Styley》和《The Uplift Mofo Party Plan》中的作品，但此张精选辑却可以让你全面地审视“红辣椒”柔美、抒情的一面。开篇曲《Under The Bridge》是“红辣椒”特意献给早期吉他手Hillel Slovak一首伤感的歌曲，Slovak因吸毒过量于1988年故去，歌曲前半部分吉他分解和弦与“切分”扫弦的对比，结尾处女声合唱的铺底，无不在暗示着人生分分合合的境遇。歌曲《Californication》中，主唱Anthony Kiedis的表现极为出色，乐句结尾处其标志性的下滑音，绝对会令你动容。精选辑中的两首新歌《Fortune Faded》和《Save The Population》有着能与“红辣椒”先前所有作品比拟的水准，简单的音乐动机，勾勒出“红辣椒”此时的心境。
