   1、手机给我们的生活带来了便利。
   2、但是手机铃声也会影响其他人。
   3、在某些场合请关掉你的手机。
                            Turn off Your Cell Phone
With the development of information techno1ogy and reduced price of communication products, the mobi1e phone has become a necessity for most people. Obviously, it shortens the distance between people and makes our life more convenient. Thanks to the cell phone, it’s easy for us to contact or be contacted by others anytime and anywhere. We will never miss any important meetings, great deals or admirable opportunities.
however, have you noticed sometimes the cell phone also brings embarrassment to us? It’s not rare to see someone pressing the cell phone to his ear and shouting loudly in public as if there were no one else present. And I’m sure each one has had such an experience that the cell phone ring continuous1y on a formal occasion. Perhaps these people have many 1ife-and-death reasons to keep the phone working at all times, but it interrupts people around them who have to hear what they don’t care when they want to concentrate on what they’re doing.
So if you are one of them, please shut off your cell phone in public, especially on a quiet and serious occasion. It’s a respect for both others and yourself.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Incomes and Savings. You should write at least 150 words, and base your composition on the table and the outline given below:

1、  上图所示为近年中国居民收入和存款增长率的变化,描述其变化并说明原因;
2、  对此做出评价。
Incomes and Savings
From the charts we can easily find that incomes in China are increasing, and savings deposits are also increasing. In 1965, the average annual income in China increased at a rate of 6%, and the savings increased 6.5%. in 2005 the numbers soared to 29.5% and 31% respectively.
The possible reasons, I think, may be as follows. First, with the development of the economy, the wealth of our whole nation’s increasing. So this promotes the increase in income and savings. Secondly, people have changed their consumption habits greatly in recent years. For example, many parents now spend a lot on their children’s education, and they have to save money for their children’s higher education. Last but not least, with the increase of income, people have more money to save, which can later be spent on insurance, house payments and other large expenses.
In my opinion, the increase of income and savings is just like a double-edged sword which can benefit the whole nation’s revenue while hindering the economy’s development. The more money is saved in the bank, the less money people spend. To put it briefly, I think China’s government should take some effective measures to encourage consumption to promote the further development of the economy.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic The Changes of the Percentages of Chinese Professions. You should write at least 150 words, and base your composition on the table and the outline given below:

1、  根据上表,简要描述1980年与1999年我国农业、工业和服务业从业人员所占比例的情况及其变化;
2、  请说明发生这些变化的原因;
3、  得出结论。
The Changes of the Percentages of Chinese Professions
It can be seen from the chart that the great changes have occurred in the professional pattern in China between 1980 and 1999 with a great increase in the people involved either in manufacturing or service and a corresponding shrinking in agricultural population. Especially, in 1999, 38% of the Chinese working in the agriculturak industry, decreased nearly half to that of 1980 while the number of people engaged in service industry quadrupled that of 1980. Why are there such great changes during 20 years?
In my opinion, three possible reasons contribute to it. First of all, with the development of primitive economy, more people will move over into manufacturing and the service industries. Secondly, China’s open-door and economic reform policies realize more efficient and effective farming and increased urbanization. For example, with the development of what is called the village and township enterprises, a great number of farmers are now working in various small business without living their homes, which accounts mainly for the increase in manufacturing population. Finally, the economic policies result in an immense improvement in the Chinese people’s living standard, which creates a great huge demand for service and thus enable the service industries to flourish and absorbs more and more people into these fields.
As far as the effect is concerned, the changes of the percentages of Chinese professions will have far-reaching significance. On the one hand, these changes signify the great achievements China has made since she launched the economic reform and opened her door to the world. On the other hand, they also mark a great leap foward on her way towards an economic power in the world. In a word, both the nation’s development and her people’s living standard will get more and more benefit from these changes.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic The Decline in Technical Secondary Schools. You should write at least 150 words, and base your composition on the table and the outline given below:

1、  上图是1999~2001年我国中等专业学校发展图表,描述其变化;
2、  简略说明产生这些变化的原因。
The Decline in Technical Secondary Schools
According to the above statistics, the number of students attending technical secondary schools is decreasing. As a result, more and more technical secondary schools have closed down, which has raised great public concern.
There are several reasons that contribute to the decline of enrollment in these schools. First, with the reform of the national educational system, colleges and high schools are enrolling an increasing number of students, resulting in intensified competition for technical secondary schools. Secondly, the requirement for technicians are becoming more and more demanding, while many of these schools have failed to meet the increased requirements and lost their attraction to young people. Thirdly, most people don’t respect these schools and play down their importance.
However, this decline will come to an end in the near future and technical secondary education will thrive once again because our society is in great need of workers with considerable technical skills for economic development. At the same time, through years of struggle for existence, these schools have learned to adapt themselves to the changing situation, orient their curriculums towards the demands of the market and provide necessary instruction for their graduates. In addition, the government considers technical secondary education to be important, and these schools will enjoy stronger support from the government.

Directions: Write a letter of complaint according to the following situation: You and your friend went to buy souvenirs, but the assistant refused your request of removing the dust from some of the bronze statues and murmured that your friend is foolish. You ask the manager to look into this unsatisfactory state of affairs.
Write your letter in no less than 150 words. Do not sign your own name at the end of the letter; use Zhang Yu instead. You do not need to write the address.
                                 A Letter of Complaint
                                                              November 23, 2007
      Dear Manager,
Much to my regret, I write this to place a complaint against one of your shop-assistants concerning bad service in the course of our shopping yesterday.
Yesterday at about ten o’clock in the morning, my husband, a lady friend of ours and I, came to your shop with the intention of buying some souvenirs. One of your shop-assistants, whose badge number was 15 if I got it right, was asked to remove the dust from some of the bronze statues in order that our friend might have a good look at these objects before making up her mind to buy. Under such a suitation, it was the assistant’s duty either to do what she was asked to do or to explain why she was unable to comply with such a request.
Instead of attending to her duty and acting in a polite manner, the assistant turned a deaf ear to our request and walked away murmuring in a sarcastic manner that our friend was foolish in asking for the removal of the dust. Great was our embarrassment in such an awkward situation.
We ask you to look into this unsatisfactory state of affairs and to take steps to prevent a similar recurrnce of such offensive behavior in future. The lady in question is from New Zealand and it would be a pity if she should form an unfavorable impression of the service in this city.
                                                             Yours Respectfully,
                                                                  Zhang Yu

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: Keeping Customs. You should write at least 150 words and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:
             1、  当移居国外时,有人喜欢入乡随俗。
             2、  有人喜欢坚持故乡风俗习惯。
             3、  你的看法。
                                    Keeping Customs
When people move to another country, they not only face a different environment and language, but also different customs. Some people choose to follow the customs of their adopted country, they may find that it helps them to adapt more quickly to the new society. They have something to discuss and share with their new neighbors, and sharing customs is one way for people to feel closer to one another. Thus, following the new customs may help immigrants feel more at home. It may also help them to see the positive things in their new environment and do forget their feelings of homesickness.
On the other hand, some people choose to continue following their own customs may also find that it helps them feel more at home. There are many things to adjust to in another country, and following their traditional customs may help people feel more secure in the new surroundings. More importantly, our customs are a part of us. They are an expression of the culture that has shaped us. This is something that most of us would like to pass down to our children and share with others.
To sum up, our customs have value and are an important part of our culture. Therefore, I don’t believe that we should abandon our traditional customs when we move to another country. At the same time, I believe that we should learn about the customs of our new home and follow those that appeal to us. In this way, we can remember and celebrate our old culture while adapting to our new one.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic How People Spend Their Holidays. You should write at least 150 words, and base your composition on the table and the outline given below:
Year  1990  1995  2000
Traveling  37%  51%  76%
Staying at home  63%  49%  24%
        1、  根据上表,简要描述1990年、1995年、2000年某城市人们度假方式的情况及其变化;
        2、  请说明发生这些变化的原因;
        3、  得出结论。
                            How People Spend Their Holidays
As is clearly shown in the table that there was a dramatic change in the way people spent their holidays between 1990 and 2000. Especially, in 1990, 63% of people spent their holidays at home, while the figure decreased considerably to 24% in 2000. there are three reasons for this phenomenon.
To begin with, with the development of market-oriented(orient 东方升起的) economy, people earn by far more money than they used to, making it possible for them to afford traveling expenses. In addition, people realize the importance of getting well-informed about the outside world in this modern era to develop their potential. For example, a traveller may encounter or talk with someone of a different cultural background so as to broaden his vision. Last but not least, by traveling outside, people are close to nature, which is not only beneficial to both their health and peace of mind. In short, more and more people take the occasion of holiday to travel outside and relax themselves.
As far as I am concerned, I prefer to go traveling instead of staying at home during holidays. On the one hand, I love meeting different people and take in some fresh ideas. On the other hand, it is agreed that the world is becoming a global village. No one could confine himself within his small circle of families or relatives. In brief, I have benefited a lot and will benefit more from traveling during the holidays.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: Perseverance. You should write at least 150 words and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:
          1、  有毅力就容易成功。
          2、  毅力使人成功的原因是什么。
          3、  毅力是必需的特质。
                                           Perseverance
Of all the advantageous characteristics to have, I think that perseverance plays the greatest role in one’s success. Other characteristics, such as intelligence, confidence, and honesty, are no doubt important, but they do not necessarily guarantee success. Perseverance offers no guarantees either, but I believe that this trait offers one more opportunity to succeed.
There are several reasons why perseverance often leads to success. First of all, a man who has perseverance does not give up after a failure. He tries again and can, therefore, learn from his mistakes. Second, a persistent person is usually a hard worker, and hard work is an important ingredient in success. Last, with perseverance comes a certain amount of confidence — the confidence that one will eventually succeed.
For all of these reasons, I believe that perseverance is the most important characteristic to have. It is easily combined with other traits such as diligence and confidence to increase the chances of success. However, without perseverance, one’s success may be more dependent on luck than anything else.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: Learning about Life. You should write at least 150 words and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:
            1、  有人喜欢听取别人的建议而学习。
            2、  有人喜欢通过亲身体验而学习。
            3、  我的选择。
                                         Learning about Life
As we grow, we learn many things about life. Some of these lessons are easy and some are difficult. Some believe that they can learn best by listening to the advice of others, while others believe that it is better to learn through personal experience.
In the first case, learning by listening to others, we have the benefit of learning from others’ mistakes and are thus being able to avoid them ourselves. Our friends and family will help us make better decisions and avoid costly errors. Furthermore, the people who know us well can advise us effectively because they understand our strengths and weaknesses. At the same time, they are sometimes able to see situations more objectively than we are.
In the second case, learning through doing, we have the advantage of gaining meaningful experience. We will no doubt better remember the lessons we learn when we enjoy the rewards or suffer the consequences ourselves. Moreover, we can often develop other skills through personal experience and can learn from our mistakes.
Given a choice between these two ways of learning about life, I would still choose the former. This is because I believe I should take advantage of all the resources available, and the experiences of my family and friends are a valuable resource. For example, if I were preparing to take my first trip abroad on my own, the advice of others who have already experienced such a trip could only help me. Just as we can learn from history, we can learn from the past actions of those close to us.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: Quick Decisions. You should write at least 150 words and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:
            1、  有人认为仓促决定一定出错,有的人并不这样认为。
            2、  我的看法并说出原因。
                                      Quick Decisions
Everyone must make many decisions every day of his life. They range from the trivial — tea or coffee for breakfast — to issues of life-changing importance, such as who to marry. Some people make decisions quickly, while others take as much time as possible to consider all their options. They tend to think that quick decisions are always wrong, but I disagree with this opinion.
As a matter of fact, quick decisions are sometimes the best ones. When faced with a difficult choice, it is often our first instinct that is the best. This is why people are sometimes told to “go with your gut”. Moreover, when we think too long about a decision we may become confused. And if we worry too much we may become so anxious that we are unable to make any decision at all. Last but not least, some decisions are simply too trivial to spend any time worrying about. When the consequences of making the “wrong” decision are slight, whether our decision is right or wrong is irrelevant.
For all of these reasons, I cannot agree with the statement that quick decisions are always wrong. Long consideration does not guarantee that the choice we make will be the right one, and sometimes too much deliberation can even lead us astray. Therefore, I believe it is all right to make a quick decision now and then, for it cannot always be wrong.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: Staying Healthy. You should write at least 150 words and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:
                1、  健康的重要性。
                2、  保持健康的方法。
                3、  养成保持健康的习惯。
                                      Staying Healthy
There is no denying the importance of health. Without it, it is difficult to live a happy life no matter how much money or success one has. In order to maintain our good health and lead lives that are as fulfilling as possible, it is important to take some steps.
The first step is to keep regular hours and stick to a healthy, balanced diet. This is the basis of good health. Our bodies need sufficient nutrition and rest in order to function well and resist illness. The second step is to get regular exercise. Moderate exercise, such as walking, can have great benefits for our health if done on a regular basis.              Third, I suggest seeing a doctor for an annual checkup. A doctor can often diagnose problems before they become serious enough to be apparent to us. Last but not least, take time to relax and renew your spirits and mental energy every day. This is just as essential as physical exercise because mental state often has a profound influence on our physical health. As the saying goes, “A sound mind in a sound body.”
There are many things that we can do to stay healthy. The important thing is to value our health and not neglect it. This means making healthy habits a part of our everyday life. If we simply develop a healthy way of living we are bound to live healthier, more satisfying lives.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: Save the Forests. You should write at least 150 words and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:
              1、  森林是最重要的自然资源。
              2、  森林对其他自然资源起着重要的作用。
              3、  保护森林,拯救地球。
                                       Save the Forests
These days we often talk about the importance of our natural resources. In many countries they are disappearing at a rapid rate and environmentalists are urging people everywhere to protect their air, water, forests, wildlife, and so on. It is difficult to choose just one natural resource to save, but in my opinion, saving the forests should be the top priority.
First of all, forests help to preserve other natural resources such as water, air, and animals. Without forests, the land cannot hold water as well. This means that in a heavy rain hillsides will collapse, causing great damage. Not only that, but without the protection of trees, the nutrient-rich topsoil will be washed away and nothing will be able to grow on the land. Trees also help to clean the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. And, of course, forests are the natural habitat of many wild animals.                                        Without them, these animals will not be able to survive. Another reason to preserve our forests is that large numbers of trees can help to mitigate the greenhouse effect by absorbing solar radiation. And finally, forests are a place where people can get close to nature, and if they learn to love nature, they will want to preserve all the earth’s natural resources.
All of the earth’s natural resources are important, and we should all work to save them. The reason that I choose the forests as most important is because they help us in so many ways. By saving the forests, I believe we can save the planet.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: Private Cars’ Effect on Our Life. You should write at least 150 words and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:
       1、汽车给人们的生活提供了诸多便利。
       2、然而汽车也给环境,交通等施加了压力。
       3、如何缓解交通压力,改善环境。
Private Cars’ Effect on Our Life
Along with the economic growth, private cars have penetrated into(穿透,渗透) a wealth of citizens’ lives because of its convenience features. Undoubtedly, the widespread use of cars promotes the social productivity and enhances the economic development. But we are supposed to weigh strengths and weaknesses of the popularity of cars. With the growing prevalence of vehicles, a host of problems have emerged.
To begin with, car emissions are having an immeasurable(不可估量的) effect on the world’s climate. Solid scientific evidence can confirm this harm. Secondly, because the car depends so heavily on fossil(化石) fuels, it is a major source of carbon dioxide(二氧化物) that causes global warming. Additionally, soaring ownership(所有权)of cars puts tremendous pressure on the limited capacity of current transport system. There is a heavy urban traffic flow with frequent traffic jam. These harmful side effects of autos burden our society with unacceptable costs to human health, the environment, and our economy.
So we must reverse this rising trend and promote the mass transportation. Our heavy reliance on private cars must be reduced.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: What Should Children Do in Their Spare Time. You should write at least 150 words and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:
      1、现在许多家长让孩子在业余时间参加各种学习班,如跳舞、绘画等。
      2、家长的观点。
      3、我的观点与看法。
What Should Children Do in Their Spare Time
Nowadays, many parents send their children to various classes in the children’s spare time. These classes can be classified into two categories. First, on school subject, their intention is to reinforce(加强) and enrich the children’s knowledge acquired in school by means of more clarification(阐明) and exercises. Second, classes to cultivate children’s interest, such as classes in English, dancing, etc.
Children’s attending classes in their spare time has become a controversial(争议的) issue. Those who are for it think that the pratice is good for the long term benefit of children and can enlighten children’s interest, broaden their horizon(视野). Those who are against it hold the view that children have been deprived of their free time by attending classes they are not interested and thus become mechanical(机械的) learners, at the price of their own interests.
I think children should have the right to enjoy their childhood, and to play. But certain guidance by parents to attend some classes is necessary since the parents have reasoning power and experince to raise the children to be prepared for their future with diversified interest and competence. But these classes should be refreshing and be able to attract children’s interest and not too much.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: My Idea of Pop Music. You should write at least 150 words and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:
      1、  有人认为流行音乐不能登大雅之堂。
      2、  有人认为音乐无高低贵贱之分,只有兴趣上的差别。
      3、  我认为……

                           My Idea of Pop Music
Pop music is held I contempt by many people. In these people’s eyes pop music is always in sharp contrast to “lofty(高雅) music”. The latter refers to symphonies and operas of the European countries. They show great concern for the fact that many people prefer pop music to symphonies, because for them pop music should be excluded from the holy palace of music.
Conversely, many people have an ordor for pop music. They argue that people who want us to listen to symphonies are advocating a kind of “elite (精华)culture”. This notion is unacceptable to pop music fans, for they don’t believe that symphonies are loftier than pop music. The difference only lies in the interests of different people. It is unfair to speak of pop music with contempt while speaking of symphonies with awe(敬畏).
In conclusion, my idea is that just as there is no distinction between high culture and low culture, so it is inappropriate to say pop music belongs to the “lower” people whereas(然而) symphonies in a higher, loftier form of music. After all, there are many badly-composed symphonies. And we can’t expect every piece of pop music to be excellent. Pop music reflects the thoughts and interests of a certain age group of a generation. It is the product of a certain age, but it also has something universal, something that belongs to all human beings, that underlies its great success among people. In this sense it is rather foolish for some people of media to show great concern simply because many people prefer pop music. Anyway pop music has become an indispensable part of the human family
