I don't lead the league in many statisticalcategories. In fact, I probably only lead the league in onecategory........Stitches!!!!! I have no idea why, but at leastevery year I receive an elbow to the skull that opens up a cut onmy face or head and I have to go to the locker room to receivestitches. It is uncanny. For those who watch the Rockets on aregular basis, you will know that I received over 11 stitches from2 different cuts in ONE WEEK! Ouch. It hurts my head just thinkingabout it.
The first cut happened when we were playingDallas. One of my teammates took a shot from the corner. I tried tosneak in for the offensive rebound. Dirk Nowitzki went up for therebound as well, but never saw me. As he started to jump, he flunghis elbow back and elbowed me, unintentionally, right in the middleof the forehead. I had just cut my hair that day. When my hair isshort there is no cushion. As soon as I received the elbow (itreally hurt!), the first thing I did was check my head for blood.Once I noticed there was blood on my hand from checking where I waselbowed. I immediately knew stitches were needed. I ran straightfor the locker room and sat on the trainer's table and waited forthe doctors to arrive. I received 5 stitches when the doctorsfinally arrived.
My stitches were in for 6 days and I had themtaken out after our game against Denver on Thursday. We played theChicago Bulls in Chicago on Saturday. Now remember, I have had thestitches out of my head for less than 48 hours. Luol Deng, who alsoattended Duke University, drove to the basket early in the firstquarter. I came over to take a charge against him and as he wasjumping away from me to avoid a charge, his right elbow caught meright above the left eye! Not again! I felt my brow for any sign ofblood and when I saw blood, I knew I needed stitches once again! Icouldn't believe it. This time the blood was everywhere! It wasgross. It looked like a zombie movie with blood gushing out from myeyebrow. When I went to the doctor's table, I received 6 morestitches.
Basketball is a very rough game. The nextnight, my teammate Yao got hit above the same eye that I got hit,and received 5 stitches. I joked with him afterwards that there iseasier ways to be like me that hurt a lot less!!!! He thought thatwas pretty funny.
Well, hopefully I will be able to avoidgetting more stitches this year. I finally had them removed lastnight. New Year's in America is coming up and I have a resolutionto avoid getting stitches in 2008!
