http://images.qianlong.com/mmsource/images/2005/04/11/whzlt041134.jpg1925年3月12日，孙中山先生在北京病逝，遗体安置在北京碧云寺内。先生曾嘱：辞世后愿“归葬紫金山”，1926年6月1日，国民政府在钟山第二峰茅山南麓开工修建陵墓，1929年春完工。4月23日，国民政府派何应钦为总理奉安迎柩总指挥。5月26日，孙中山先生灵柩扶入灵车，由北平南移。28日，灵柩抵达南京。停灵公祭至31日。6月1日，在南京紫金山中山陵园举行奉安大典，灵柩由其夫人宋庆龄和儿子孙科及党政要人护入墓室。各国使节、各界群众前往送殡，队伍长达3公里。

1925年孙中山先生在京逝世后，曾在碧云寺的后殿停过灵柩，因而此殿后改为中山堂。金刚宝座塔下，成为孙中山衣冠冢。
